Those were the heart and soul of Beirut before the crazy Lebanese decided to destroy it.
Beirut was destroyed overnight or even in the two year civil war 1975-1976. Beirut was systematically and methodically destroyed for 15 consecutive years until the Beiruties in particular reached the point of no return and were deliberately put off to dismiss the idea of restoring their city as it should be…
In this episode I’ll write about the dearest place to my heart, Bab Idriss, the Ghandour street.
Only 5o meters long , 8 meters wide, derived from Patriarch Hoyek from the north and from George picot from the east and Al Zaitouneh from the west. Surrounded by the old Kassab Building, Sarafian and sabbagha bank,Wadih Mrad and Cosmos,Ghandour street was the backbone of industry. It provided factories with industrial spare parts and ships with the necessary parts to keep them intact. That’s where our shop was : Mohammad Ali Amkieh for central heating and sanitary ware, the self made man who proved himself among whales…to be coninued

• I was 18 years old when the civil war broke out in Lebanon.Our shop in Bab Idriss  had been looted before it was burnt down to ashes during the first round. Since then I’ve been stuck in the memory of Bab Idriss,Zaitouneh,Wegan,Allenby,Borj,Wad Abu Jmeel, George Picot,and the best of the best our street, Ghandour street, that’s where our shop was located. Ghandour street was specialized in selling industrial articles, valves,tools, heating systems, rubber transmission belting, conveyors, etc.There, my father (ALLAH YERHAMO) taught me everything I know about business and above all he taught me how to be a man. I owe that to him…
